THE ARTIST

Once seeing L.Freud’s paintings 8 years ago, Nyse 1 found the love for art immediately. When starting study at Manchester’s art collage a personal style of painting was found almost straight away. Unique expressive mark-making, built up layers of media, especially black and white became clear traits of Nyse 1’s art work. When making the move to university in London, Nyse 1’s work found a whole new influence and subject matter.....the city it’s self! Particularly when meeting partner ‘Rust’ (graffiti writer) Nyse’s work started to move off the canvas and onto a new range of surfaces. Concrete, brick, steal, wood and general urban materials were now the starting place for Nyse 1’s much loved figures and portraits. Textures of the city were recreated in the surfaces of the paintings, playing an important role in the development of the pieces. Building up layers upon layers of colour and tactile media, help the paintings come to life. But it wasn’t just the materials of the environment that influenced Nyse but the way the art was put out there “The streets offer a sense of survival; other street artists are at constant battle upon one another. The work and respect for one another becomes physical and important. It’s a great thing to see happen” Not only paintings but ceramics, extravagant installations, wood work, film making, photography and printing have been seen throughout Nyse 1’s art over the years and we see constant exploration of materials and the way they are used. The work is open minded and clearly not restricted to the one medium. The work offers us a creative view of the urban world as well as the human figure and more recent, traditional tattoo designs. There seems to be no end to the artists creative ideas and subject matters “fusing traditional graffiti with fine art, Nyse 1’s images range from sickly sweet sugar skulls to screaming men. Varied as it is skillful, it’s a joy to find a painting on the wall round the corner” - Abby Clark
